Little did Mr. Shakespeare know that 400 years later college students would be dragging their feet in writing papers about his plays. I mean c'mon, do you really think he wrote Othello with the intention of people writing papers about it, or was he just looking for an honest living? I believe it was the latter.
I think he was writing movie scripts without movies being invented yet, so that 400 years later when I was feeling bored and lonely on a Friday night, I could watch "Much Ado About Nothing" and laugh at how ridiculous everyone in it was. I think schools ruin Shakespeare by making us read all his tragedies and expecting us to take them seriously.
ReplyDeleteI think schools ruin Shakespeare by making us read him. Period. It would be the equivalent of a high school student 400 years from now reading the script to a Steven Spielberg movie for a class on literature.
